On Tuesday sweet baby Harper turned a year old and this is the letter I wrote to her in celebration on her birthday and her life thus far.
Harper,
Today you are one year old. How quickly your first rotation around the sun has felt. Maybe it is because your presence here has made me feel both grounded and off kilter all at the same time, the world must be spinning faster than it was before I knew you.
You have grown and your personality has blossomed exponentially. On this day one year ago you were new, still folded up with the memory of a time before your birth. Today when I woke you were stretched out in every direction; your lanky body looked surprisingly large next to mine. I remember how frighteningly small you seemed just a year ago, now the speed at which you have grown brings both pride and fear.
You are a sweet and beautiful child. Affectionate , independent and spirited. You laugh frequently, give sloppy baby kisses and hugs that include a pat on the back and walk when no one is looking. You dance and sing to any type of music but your affinity for The Beatles grows stronger as time passes and I find it hard to believe John, Paul, George and Ringo will ever fall from your graces.
Watching you grow and learn has been one of the greatest joys of my life. Every day you teach me to find importance in things long forgotten. A fresh set of building blocks, bubbles, strawberries, the grass underneath your feet, the swell of the ocean, a warm nap. For this I have only you to thank.
I find myself still waking at night sometimes, to watch you sleep and even though so much has changed, so much remains the same. You are still my July Firecracker who will not be ignored. Every single day you amaze me and I have a feeling this will never change. And so little guppy, Happy Birthday. I love you so and wish for you many many many more years of growth, laughter and much happiness filled with good food, amazing people, and breathtaking experiences.
