"The thing women have yet to learn is nobody gives you power. You just take it." -Roseanne Barr

Yes, I know its August but I am getting caught up on all the things I promised I would do. Each month I pick a different charity to support and donate money. While I have donated to these charities I haven't written about why they are so important. Expect a couple more of these in the next few weeks until I am caught up.

March's Charity: Planned Parenthood
Who are they and what do they do? Planned Parenthood is a trusted health care provider, an informed educator, a passionate advocate, and a global partner helping similar organizations around the world. Planned Parenthood delivers vital reproductive health care, sex education, and information to millions of women, men, and young people worldwide.

For more than 90 years, Planned Parenthood has promoted a commonsense approach to women’s health and well-being, based on respect for each individual’s right to make informed, independent decisions about health, sex, and family planning. (About Us, Planned Parenthood)

Some services they provide are HIV and other STD testing, birth control, breast exams, pap smears and sex education. These services are available to anyone who asks for them regardless of their income, sexual orientation, gender, or race.

How do they do it? With the support of individual donors and some government funding Planned Parenthood makes these services available at little to no cost depending on income of the individual. They are accessible to people who do not health insurance.

  1. You know this is a personal favorite of mine. I am very grateful for the programs Planned Parenthood provided as I used it from 18-25 when I was a broke college student/recent grad with no insurance. It is now on my regular donations list.
